Johannesburg – Democratic Alliance’s mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, Helen Zille, has sparked attention after sharing a viral video in which she claims she was told to wait on the grass while the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department prepared to arrest her for entering the Metro Centre.
“POV: You were told to wait on the grass before the JMPD comes to arrest you for entering the Metro Centre,” she wrote on the video.
“We did it for you, Joburg. #BelieveInJoburg#Zille4Mayor,” she captioned the post on Instagram.
The incident follows an earlier attempt by Zille and her team to access the Metro Centre building, where they were denied entry by security, according to The South African.
She said the visit was part of an oversight effort to assess the condition of the abandoned facility and check how sensitive municipal records are being stored.
Zille criticised the denial of access as “undemocratic,” arguing that public accountability is at stake.
The video has drawn strong support from social media users.
Zille, announced as the DA’s Johannesburg mayoral candidate in 2025, is campaigning on improving service delivery, creating jobs, tackling corruption and restoring effective governance in the city.
