Pretoria — The Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa has accelerated its preparations for the 2026 Local Government Elections following confirmation of the poll date by Cyril Ramaphosa.
Ramaphosa announced on Thursday that South Africans will head to the polls on 4 November 2026, a move the Commission described as a critical milestone in the electoral calendar.
Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said the announcement provides clarity for all stakeholders and enables the Commission to intensify its operational planning.
“The announcement of the election date provides clarity for all role players and certainty of planning for the Electoral Commission as we continue our work to deliver free and fair municipal elections,” Mamabolo said.
The Commission has urged eligible voters to verify their registration status ahead of the elections, particularly those who have recently relocated.

It emphasised that voters may only cast their ballots at the voting station where they are registered.
Citizens who are not yet registered have been encouraged to do so either online or during a planned national voter registration weekend scheduled for 20 and 21 June 2026.
While the President has confirmed the election date, the IEC noted that the formal legal proclamation is still pending. In line with legislation, the official proclamation will be issued by Velenkosini Hlabisa, at which point the national voters’ roll will be closed.
The Commission said its online registration platform remains accessible via its official website, allowing users to register or update their details using digital devices.
The IEC called on all eligible South Africans to take advantage of the available registration opportunities and participate fully in the upcoming elections, which will determine leadership at municipal level across the country.
