Cape Town – South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign has become an unlikely flashpoint in the country’s ongoing debate around illegal immigration, with reactions to Bafana Bafana’s opening defeat to Mexico exposing deep ideological divisions.
Bafana suffered a 2-0 loss to Mexico on Thursday night, prompting contrasting responses from politicians and public figures on either side of the immigration debate.
Ahead of the match, support for the two teams had already become intertwined with political views, with some critics of South Africa’s stance on immigration openly backing Mexico and hoping Bafana Bafana would be humbled.
According to The Citizen, EFF spokesperson Sinawo Thambo argued on Friday that South Africa’s reputation was being damaged by attitudes and actions towards foreign nationals.
In a post on X, Thambo criticised anti-illegal immigration activists, describing them as “a handful of hateful Ntelezi idiots” who were undermining the goodwill built by previous generations.
“All the genuine outrage against illegal immigration has drowned under their violent acts, human rights violations and threats while they run around the country barefoot telling us they are men,” he wrote.
Social media users also joked that an early World Cup exit would allow South African players to return home to “defend their jobs and women”, alongside other comments aimed at the country’s immigration tensions.

Thambo argued that the reactions extended beyond football banter and reflected broader social and political sentiments.
“This is not only banter, it’s political satire. It shows how the world view is shifting towards viewing South Africa as a hub of hate, something that has never been part of our identity,” he posted.
Despite the disappointment of the defeat, Bafana Bafana received support from ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, who urged South Africans to remain behind the national team.
Mbalula reminded supporters that the squad had earned its place at the tournament and deserved continued backing.
“Most of the haters we’ve seen are doing so outside the club because they couldn’t get in.
“We stand as a country solid behind our boys – and won’t bury them for a single match when they’ve already defied every doubt,” he posted on X.

Mbalula’s comments are notable given that he famously described Bafana Bafana as “a bunch of losers” in 2014 following their group-stage exit from the African Nations Championship on home soil.
On Friday, however, he struck a more encouraging tone, describing South Africa as the “greatest country in the world” and calling for unity behind the national team.
“One result does not define this journey. Rise, South Africa. Our boys are not done,” he wrote.
According to IOL, the South African government also commended Bafana Bafana for their spirited performance against Mexico despite the disappointing result.
Government said the team represented the country with unity, determination and pride on football’s biggest stage and encouraged the players, coaching staff and support personnel to remain focused ahead of their remaining group-stage fixtures.

South Africans were urged to continue rallying behind the national team and support the players as they carry the hopes of the nation throughout the tournament.
Government also called on supporters to wear the national colours on Bafana Fridays and remain united behind the team for the remainder of their World Cup campaign.
It said South Africa remains proud of Bafana Bafana and believes the team has the ability to bounce back stronger in the matches ahead.
“All of us. All in. Kaofela.”
