Durban – Ten children were safely evacuated from a creche after part of the building caught fire in Waterloo, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday morning.
A teacher noticed the fire at Learning Together Creche and evacuated the children before emergency services arrived, according to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA).
“Ten (10) children were safely evacuated by a teacher after she noticed part of the creche had caught alight in Waterloo, KwaZulu-Natal, this morning (Thursday),” RUSA said in a statement.
RUSA and eThekwini Fire and Rescue Services responded to the incident.
The fire caused extensive damage to the creche, but no injuries were reported.
“The structure sustained extensive damage in the fire. No injuries were reported,” RUSA said.
An electrical connection is believed to have caused the blaze, although authorities have not confirmed the cause.
“An electrical connection is believed to have caused the blaze, however, this has not been confirmed,” the emergency response unit said.
The circumstances surrounding the fire are expected to be investigated as authorities determine its cause and assess the extent of the damage.
