Knysna – A 48-year-old ward councillor has been shot dead in Joodsekamp, Knysna, while one of three passengers travelling with him was wounded in the attack.
The shooting happened in Ngxalo Street at about 21:20 on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
“Detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit are investigating a murder and three counts of attempted murder following a shooting incident in Joodsekamp, Knysna,” police said.
SAPS said officers responding to reports of gunfire found the councillor with multiple gunshot wounds to his head and upper body. He was declared dead at the scene.
Preliminary information indicates that the councillor was driving a vehicle carrying three passengers when an unidentified man approached the vehicle and opened fire.
“The councillor was driving a vehicle with three passengers when they were approached by an unknown man who opened fire on the vehicle before fleeing the scene on foot,” SAPS said.
One of the passengers was struck by a bullet in the arm and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police have not yet established a motive for the killing, and no arrests have been made.
“The motive for the shooting is yet to be determined and no arrests have been made at this stage,” SAPS said.
Forensic personnel processed the crime scene as detectives began following up on leads to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify the person responsible.
“Detectives are following up on all available leads to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible,” police said.
