The government warned that illegal immigration places pressure on public services and social stability, saying it must be managed through “lawful, orderly and credible state processes”.
At the same time, officials strongly condemned any violence, intimidation or threats directed at foreign nationals, saying such conduct is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said that through Operation Shanela, a nationwide crime-prevention initiative, 29,731 undocumented foreign nationals have been arrested since 1 January 2026.
Authorities said the operations continue as part of broader efforts to enforce immigration laws and maintain public order.
The government emphasised that all enforcement measures are carried out in line with the Constitution and are aimed at ensuring compliance with South Africa’s immigration framework, particularly as public debate around immigration enforcement intensifies.
