Stutterheim – Six men have been arrested in the Eastern Cape for allegedly manufacturing and distributing counterfeit alcoholic beverages, with illicit liquor valued at more than R500,000 seized during the operation.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the arrests were made on Wednesday evening, 22 April 2026, following intelligence about a vehicle transporting suspicious goods.
Police said officers from Visible Policing in Stutterheim acted on information about a white Nissan panel van with Gauteng registration plates travelling from KuGompo City to Stutterheim. A vehicle checkpoint was set up along the N6 to intercept the vehicle.
“At around 19:00, members spotted the vehicle fitting the description and pulled it off the road,” SAPS said.
“The vehicle had one occupant and was filled with clean empty bottles.”
Further investigation led officers to a house in Entilini, Lower Khologha, where five additional suspects were found allegedly producing and packaging counterfeit alcoholic spirits.
Police seized several boxes of illicit alcohol as well as R6,570 in cash at the scene. Authorities believe the premises had been operating as an illegal manufacturing site since 2025.
“The six suspects, aged between 22 and 36, are expected to appear in court soon,” SAPS said.
They are set to face charges related to the contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act 31 of 1997, as well as the Liquor Act.
Police have reiterated their commitment to combating illicit trade and counterfeit goods, warning that such operations pose significant risks to public health and the economy.
