Gqeberha – The South African Police Service (SAPS) says the four Public Order Policing (POP) officers who were reported missing in the Eastern Cape have been found safe and unharmed after spending the night in a remote area along the Baviaanskloof route.
In a statement on Friday, SAPS confirmed that Warrant Officer Martin Fourie, Constable Lyle Fondling, Constable Azola Mgoduka and Constable Imraan Moosa, all attached to the Public Order Policing Unit in Gqeberha, were located at about 08:30.
“The South African Police Service confirms that the four officers reported missing yesterday evening have been located and are safe,” the statement said.
According to SAPS, the officers had been deployed to assist with stability operations ahead of the TransBaviaans cycling race.
“The members were deployed to assist with stability ahead of the TransBaviaans cycling race. Upon their return, their vehicle became stuck along the Baviaanskloof route, and due to a lack of cellphone reception, they were unable to call for assistance,” SAPS said.
Police said the officers were forced to abandon their vehicle and seek shelter after walking to the nearest reserve.
“They walked to the nearest reserve, where they took shelter overnight. All four members are unharmed and are currently being attended to,” the statement added.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata welcomed the news, thanking everyone involved in the search effort.
“We are immensely relieved that our members have been found safe. I extend my deepest gratitude to all role players who assisted: the SAPS members from neighbouring stations who worked tirelessly, Gift of the Givers, local farmers, private security companies in the area, and the SANDF. Your swift response and cooperation made all the difference,” said Ncata.
SAPS also expressed its appreciation to members of the public and partner organisations for their support during the search.
“The SAPS thanks the public and all partners for their support and concern during this time,” the statement said.
