Cape Town – A 28-year-old man was reportedly arrested at the Bram Fischer International Airport in Bloemfontein on Monday after he was found in possession of a drill hand grenade.
According to Times Live, police said the suspect arrived at the airport and reported at check-in-counter, where he handed over his luggage to be searched.
When the G4S officer on duty placed the man’s bag inside the X-ray scanner, metal was detected, and the round object was visible on the monitor.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Covane said the security officer searched the bag and found the drill hand grenade.
Police stationed at the airport were alerted, and “an immediate decision was taken to activate the evacuation alarm because of the possibility of a threat in the terminal building,” said Covane, according to The Citizen.
A case docket for possession of hand-grenade shell and interference with airport operations was filed, the report said.
Meanwhile, the building was declared safe and operations continued as normal.
