Amersfoort – One person has been killed and another injured following a hostage incident at a farm in Amersfoort, Mpumalanga, in which the 55-year-old suspect allegedly shot himself dead during police negotiations.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the incident occurred on Saturday, 10 October 2026, at a farm in the Gert Sibande District.
According to police, officers received a call about a hostage situation at approximately 06:00 and were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, they found three victims who had managed to escape. The victims reportedly told police that an armed 55-year-old man had held them hostage.
The suspect allegedly shot and killed a victim, aged approximately 50, and shot another victim, aged around 53, leaving him for dead. The injured victim survived and was airlifted to hospital for medical treatment.
The suspect subsequently retreated to his house on the same farm, prompting police to mobilise a team of hostage negotiators.
“Whilst negotiations were underway with the suspect, he reportedly shot himself,” SAPS said, adding that he was certified dead at the scene.
Police said the suspect’s identity was known but would only be released once the relevant processes had been completed.
A 9mm pistol was recovered at the scene, while cases of murder, attempted murder and kidnapping have been opened for investigation.
Meanwhile, Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise expressed concern over the incident, warning about the dangers of firearms when used unlawfully.
“Firearms, when mishandled or used unlawfully, contribute to violent crime and the loss of lives,” Modise said.
She urged members of the public to report anyone whose conduct involving a firearm raises concerns, including licensed firearm owners who may be acting contrary to the Firearms Control Act.
“Such conduct should be reported immediately to authorities before another life is lost,” she said.
