Johannesburg – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it will not proceed with the Emmarentia road rage case for now as police investigations into the fatal shooting are still ongoing.
A 58-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident has since been released after his legal team successfully argued that the matter should not be enrolled until investigations are complete.
Prosecutors indicated the case could return to court once sufficient evidence is gathered, and it may potentially be referred for an inquest.
The suspect had been expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on murder and attempted murder charges, but the NPA confirmed it would not prosecute at this stage pending further investigation.
The incident stemmed from a minor collision on 19 April that escalated into a violent altercation between two drivers in Emmarentia.

According to police, both men allegedly produced firearms during the confrontation, leading to a shooting that left one driver dead and his wife injured.
In a warning statement, the suspect claims he acted in self-defence, alleging that the deceased and his wife initiated the confrontation, assaulted him, and discharged a firearm first before he returned fire. The woman was hospitalised after sustaining injuries.
