Polokwane – A 26-year-old man has been arrested in Polokwane for perjury after allegedly fabricating a theft case in an attempt to claim insurance, police said.
The suspect was taken into custody on Thursday, 23 April 2026 at about 16:00, following an investigation into a reported laptop theft at a supermarket parcel counter in Polokwane.
According to police, the man had initially opened a case claiming his laptop had been stolen.
However, during follow-up investigations, the investigating officer requested further details and began verifying the incident using available surveillance footage.
Before the footage could confirm the report, the complainant admitted that the laptop had not been stolen and was in fact at his home in Mamadimo Park.
Police then proceeded to the residence, where the suspect produced the laptop.
Officers confirmed that the serial number matched the device previously reported as stolen.
Upon further questioning, the man allegedly admitted that he had falsely reported the theft in an attempt to claim from insurance.
He was immediately arrested and charged with perjury.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 24 April 2026.
