North West – Two men have appeared in court in connection with an alleged job-for-cash scam linked to the Matlosana Local Municipality in North West.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said Tlotlo Modise (29) and Olehile Mongale (29) appeared before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, facing charges of corruption, forgery, uttering and money laundering.
The pair were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit earlier the same day.
According to police, the case stems from an incident in June 2024, when a job seeker applied for a general worker position at the Matlosana Local Municipality.
“It is alleged that… the complainant was asked… to pay R13 000 in order to secure employment at the municipality,” SAPS said.
Police said the complainant paid the money in two instalments—R8,000 into Mongale’s account and R5,000 into Modise’s account—after which she was invited to an interview and later presented with what appeared to be an appointment letter.
Investigations revealed that the letter allegedly contained a forged signature of the municipal manager and that the job offer was fraudulent.
“Further probe uncovered that Modise drafted an appointment letter bearing a forged signature of the municipal manager,” police said.
The scam came to light after the complainant became suspicious and reported the matter to authorities.
Modise faces charges of corruption, forgery and uttering, while Mongale is charged with money laundering.
Both accused were granted bail of R500 each, and the case has been postponed to 4 June 2026.
