Zeerust – Five suspects, including a police officer, have been arrested in connection with an ATM bombing in Dinokana, Zeerust, following an intelligence-driven operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The arrests come after a multidisciplinary team tracked the suspects to Magogae village near Mmabatho, where a confrontation with police led to a shootout. Three suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange.
Police said the operation involved several specialised units, including the National Intervention Unit, Tactical Response Team, K9 units, detectives and crime scene management teams.
North West police commissioner Major General Ryno Naidoo praised the coordinated effort that led to the arrests.
“The actions of any member of the SAPS who engages in criminality are a betrayal of the oath to serve and protect. Such conduct will not be tolerated, and those found on the wrong side of the law will face the full might of the law,” Naidoo said.
He also welcomed the swift progress in the case, highlighting the commitment of officers involved in tracking down the suspects.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon on charges including ATM bombing, possession of explosives and related offences.
Police said investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to trace additional suspects linked to the crime.
