Johannesburg – The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has arrested two suspects following an incident involving the alleged impersonation of public officials and the unlawful use of emergency equipment in Sandton.
The arrests were made on Saturday, 2 May 2026, during routine patrols at the intersection of Rivonia Road and Grayston Drive by JMPD’s Crime Prevention Unit (Region E) and Tactical Response Unit (TRU).
According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, officers intercepted a grey Haval vehicle fitted with unauthorised blue lights. Upon being stopped, the male driver claimed he was the official driver for the mayor of Nala Municipality and was transporting the mayor at the time.
The female passenger supported the claim, identifying herself as the mayor and providing personal details to officers.
However, suspicions were raised when a vehicle check revealed that the car was not state-owned but registered to a bank. Both individuals were subsequently taken to South African Police Service in Sandton for further investigation.
Police later established that the woman had been impersonating the mayor of Nala Municipality, while the driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol and in possession of illegal blue light equipment. Authorities also indicated that the driver is allegedly affiliated with a political party in the Free State.
The driver now faces charges of impersonating a police official, driving under the influence, and the unlawful use of blue lights. The female passenger has been charged with impersonation.
Both suspects have been detained at Sandton police station and are expected to appear in court soon.
The JMPD has commended the officers involved for their vigilance, warning that the misuse of blue lights is a serious offence that undermines public safety and the integrity of law enforcement.
Authorities reiterated that no individual, regardless of their status or affiliations, is above the law.
