Five held in R3m jewellery case

Durban – Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested five suspects following a robbery at a jewellery store in a shopping mall in Umhlanga, recovering items worth an estimated R3 million.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the suspects, aged between 20 and 44, were apprehended in Umlazi in the early hours of Monday after a coordinated operation by the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit and the eThekwini District Task Team.

The robbery took place on Sunday, 12 April 2026.

“While processing the scene at the mall, police received crucial information that the suspects involved in the robbery were seeking a buyer for the stolen items in Umlazi.
“Police officers from the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, as well as the eThekwini District Task Team, swiftly acted on the intelligence and proceeded to Umlazi in search of the suspects,” police said in a statement.
“Through coordinated effort, hard work, and perseverance, police arrested five (5) suspects in the early hours of Monday morning, 13 April 2026. During the operation, jewellery estimated to be valued at R3 million was recovered, as well as clothing, bank cards, and mobile routers.”

The suspects have been charged with business robbery and attempted murder. They are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 15 April 2026.

Police confirmed that investigations into the case are ongoing.
