Are more diesel hikes coming? Here’s what the numbers say

Cape Town – South Africans faced steep fuel price hikes in April due to a spike in global oil prices linked to the Middle East conflict, with petrol rising by R3.06 per litre and diesel increasing by over R7 per litre, despite a temporary R3 fuel levy relief.

Early data suggests diesel prices could rise further in May, potentially by around R6 per litre, though earlier projections were higher before a fragile ceasefire helped stabilise oil prices below $100 a barrel.

Petrol prices are also expected to increase, but possibly at a lower rate if current trends continue.

Future price movements will largely depend on developments in the Middle East and whether the government extends the temporary fuel levy relief.

If conditions hold, diesel could average between R33 and R35 per litre in May.

Analysts warn that ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and market volatility make accurate predictions difficult, even as oil prices show signs of easing.
