Gqeberha – A man who was allegedly hijacked and forced into the boot of his own car was rescued by police in Soweto-on-Sea after officers heard him crying for help.
According to News24, police were responding to reports of a robbery in progress when they spotted two men running along Pityana Street in Soweto-on-Sea on Thursday.
Police searched the suspects and allegedly found them carrying stolen property, including cellphones and bank cards.
A related report by Algoa FM said police were alerted to the vehicle after questioning one of the suspects about the cellphones. Officers then went to investigate and heard a man calling for help from the boot of a white Suzuki Ignis.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg said: “They opened the boot and rescued the victim, who told them he had been hijacked opposite Daku Shoprite in Kwazakhele and forced into the vehicle.”
The two suspects, aged 21 and 23, were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property. Police also opened cases of carjacking, house robbery and possession of suspected stolen property.
The recovered property, including the vehicle, is estimated to be worth about R145,000, while detectives are investigating whether the suspects could be linked to other robberies.
The suspects are expected to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The incident comes as police continue to target organised and violent crime in Gqeberha. In a separate August operation, IOL reported that police discovered another man allegedly hiding in the boot of a Mercedes-Benz during a drug operation that resulted in the seizure of suspected drugs worth about R1.5 million.
