Durban – A 35-year-old man was assaulted and robbed at gunpoint after stopping to give two men a cigarette while walking to a clinic in Trenance Park, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday morning.
According to a statement from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the incident occurred shortly before 9.30am.
RUSA said its Operations Centre received a call for assistance at approximately 9.31am.
On arrival, officers established that “the victim had been walking along a road when two (2) men approached him and requested a cigarette.”
“The victim handed one (1) cigarette to the pair before one (1) of the men produced a firearm and pointed it at him. He was struck twice on the head with the firearm, forced to the ground, assaulted, and robbed of his smartphone,” the statement said.
The suspects fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction.
RUSA said a relative of the victim claimed to have recognised the two men and alleged that they worked as taxi conductors in Trenance Park.
“A relative informed Officers that she had seen the two (2) men previously and alleged that they worked as Taxi Conductors in Trenance Park – KZN, but this could not be immediately verified,” the organisation said.
The victim suffered injuries to his face and head during the attack. No arrests had been reported at the time of publication.
