Johannesburg – An 18-year-old Grade 12 learner from Ingqayizivele Secondary School has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 17-year-old learner from the same school in Tembisa.
According to the South African Police Service, the suspect was arrested on 7 May 2026 following investigations into the death of 17-year-old Lethabo Maroga.
Police said officers were called to a murder scene on Friday, 24 April 2026, in an open space between Emkhathini and Endulwini sections in Tembisa, where the teenager’s body was discovered dumped in a stream.
“The body of a teenage girl, still in school uniform, was found dumped in a stream, with stab wounds on the upper body,” police said in a statement.
The victim was later identified as Maroga, who was from Vusumuzi Section.
Police said detectives immediately launched an investigation and followed up on information that eventually led to the arrest of the suspect.
Tembisa Station Commander Cyril Nkuna praised investigators for their work in the case.
“With this arrest, I urge the community to remain calm and allow the police space to do their work so that justice can take its course,” Nkuna said.
“We do not have to rush arresting suspects, but we want to present watertight cases before the courts and finally remove criminals from the community through hefty sentences,” he added.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder.
