Orkney – Police in Orkney, North West, have arrested a 20-year-old suspect in connection with the gruesome murder of a 71-year-old pensioner whose body was found burnt beyond recognition inside a vehicle.
The arrest follows an incident on Wednesday, 10 June 2026, when mine security alerted police to a burnt-out panel van discovered in a remote veld behind Shaft No. 6 in Orkney.
Upon arrival at the scene at about 06:00, officers found the remains of a body in the back of the vehicle, which had been extensively burnt. Police have since opened a case of murder and defeating the ends of justice.
Preliminary investigations led officers to a nearby address in Orkney, where they found the property locked. Blood stains were observed on the driveway, extending towards a neighbouring house.
Further probing established that the suspect and the deceased were neighbours.
Police later gained entry into the neighbour’s residence, which was unlocked, and recovered what is believed to be the murder weapon, along with personal belongings of the deceased, including a cellular phone.
The suspect was later traced to a local hospital, where he was arrested and placed under police guard.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in North West, Major General Dr Ryno Naidoo, condemned the killing, describing it as a “heinous act of crime”.
He praised the swift response by investigators and said the suspect will face the full might of the law.
Police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing are ongoing.
