Free State – Three teenagers have been arrested in connection with a burglary at a primary school in Reddersburg, Free State, where electronic learning devices used by pupils were stolen.
According to the South African Police Service, the burglary was discovered early on Friday morning when a school caretaker found that the school library, where electronic learning equipment is stored, had been broken into.
“Upon further inspection, it was established that several Samsung tablets, used by learners, had been stolen,” police said in a statement.
The school principal alerted authorities, prompting members of the Reddersburg police to attend the scene and launch an investigation.
“SAPS members arrived at the scene and conducted a preliminary investigation, which revealed that the suspects gained entry into the building by smashing a window,” the statement said.
Police immediately initiated a tracing and tracking operation, which led to the arrest of three suspects aged between 14 and 16.
“This intelligence-led pursuit resulted in the arrest of three suspects aged between 14 and 16 as well as the recovery of 11 Samsung tablets with an estimated value of R27,500,” SAPS said.
In line with the Children’s Act, the suspects, who are minors, were released into the care of their parents or guardians.
“In accordance with the Children’s Act 38 of 2005, as the suspects are minors, they have been released into the custody of their parents/guardians,” police confirmed.
The trio is expected to make their first preliminary appearance in the Reddersburg Magistrate’s Court on 19 May 2026.
Police said investigations are continuing as seven tablets remain missing.
“While a significant portion of the stolen goods has been recovered, seven tablets remain outstanding,” the statement added.
Authorities said detectives and tracing teams are pursuing active leads to recover the remaining devices and determine whether additional suspects were involved in the burglary.
