Harare – Bellarmine “Chatunga” Mugabe, the son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, has returned to Zimbabwe after settling a R600,000 fine following his conviction in South Africa.
According to ZBC News Online, Mugabe arrived at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare on Wednesday evening.
His return follows a conviction and sentencing in Johannesburg earlier this year in connection with a shooting incident.
Mugabe, along with his cousin Tobias Matonhodze, appeared before the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning. While Mugabe secured his release through the fine payment, Matonhodze was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
Matonhodze is set to begin serving his sentence on Thursday after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice, possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition, and contravening immigration laws.
Presiding magistrate Renier Boshoff said Matonhodze’s guilty plea worked in his favour, noting that he faced more serious charges than his co-accused. However, the court maintained that a custodial sentence was necessary given the severity of the offences.
Court officials confirmed that deportation proceedings were finalised immediately after Mugabe paid his fine, allowing his return to Zimbabwe.
The case has drawn significant public attention due to Mugabe’s high-profile family ties and the seriousness of the charges involved.
