Cape Town – Video clips featuring a group of South Africans claiming to be the “mountain people” of Cape Town have gone viral on social media, prompting viewers to question whether the encounter was genuine or an attempt to attract tourists.
The clips were filmed outside the Castle of Good Hope by a US tourist, who uses the TikTok handle @cocoboothe and shared her experience on the social media platform.
The group, which included a woman and several children, introduced themselves using what they described as their indigenous names. They claimed to live in the mountains and said they come down to the city to get food and other necessities.
The woman told the tourist: “We are people of nature, we align with nature and are guided by nature. I am because of you. We are forever the native of the land.”

When asked about the language she spoke and the specific tribe she belonged to, she was unable to provide an answer.
She explained their daily routine, saying: “We come down before the sun rises and go home when the sun sets. The sun will burn your skin when trying to go up, and the water in you will dehydrate. Also, people stop us a lot for pictures.”

The tourist described the encounter as “the most fascinating part of our trip so far”, but South Africans commenting online were more sceptical, with some accusing the group of “catfishing” tourists and others describing it as a humorous hustle.
The authenticity of the video remains unclear. However, the Cape region is home to indigenous Khoisan communities, some of whom have historical and cultural ties to the mountains of the Cape Peninsula.
