SARS refutes reports of cyberattack, calls allegations false

Johannesburg – The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has dismissed social media claims and online reports alleging that its systems were breached, describing the allegations as “false and unsubstantiated”.

In a statement issued on Monday, SARS said it had conducted a “thorough investigation” after becoming aware of the circulating reports and found no evidence that its systems had been compromised.

“At this stage, there is no evidence that SARS’s systems have been compromised. SARS wishes to reassure the public regarding the integrity of its systems,” the revenue service said.

SARS said it continuously monitors its digital platforms for suspicious activity and stressed that protecting taxpayer information remains one of its core responsibilities.

The tax authority said safeguarding sensitive information forms part of its broader commitment to building “a smart, modern institution with unquestionable integrity” while strengthening public confidence in the country’s tax administration system.

SARS also urged members of the public to avoid spreading unverified information and to rely only on official communication channels for accurate updates.

The revenue collector further warned taxpayers and traders to remain alert to scams and phishing attempts, particularly fraudulent messages claiming to originate from SARS.

Members of the public were encouraged to consult SARS’s official guidance on scams and phishing attacks through the agency’s website.

SARS said it would continue monitoring its digital environment and communicate any developments through its verified platforms.
