Pretoria – President Cyril Ramaphosa has approved Phase One of the Eskom Restructuring Task Team (ERTT) report, paving the way for major reforms aimed at transforming South Africa’s electricity sector.
According to the Presidency, the reforms are expected to promote competition, attract investment, lower electricity tariffs, strengthen energy security, and drive economic growth and job creation.
Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the creation of an Independent Transmission Company (TSO) is central to the reforms.

“The Independent Transmission Company (TSO) is a key enabler of a successful competitive wholesale electricity market that is expected to deliver reliable and cost-effective electricity.”
He added that the reforms would have broader economic benefits.
“This reform will support higher rates of economic growth, investment, and job creation.”
Magwenya explained that the restructuring process is being implemented in two phases. Phase One, completed at the end of June, focused on developing a high-level proposal to establish the TSO, while Phase Two, due within the next three months, will produce a detailed implementation plan and timelines for completing the restructuring.
