Cape Town – Cape Town has outperformed Johannesburg in international tourism and lifestyle rankings over the past three years, strengthening its reputation as one of the world’s leading travel destinations, while Johannesburg continues to distinguish itself in finance, technology and nightlife.
According to BusinessTech, Cape Town has accumulated international recognition for its food, natural attractions, hospitality and tourism infrastructure, while Johannesburg’s accolades reflect its importance as a commercial and technological hub.
The World Travel Awards named Cape Town Africa’s Leading City Destination for 2026, extending its winning streak to six consecutive years, from 2021.
The city also won Africa’s Leading Meetings and Conference Destination title for 2026, according to the awards organisation’s official results.
Cape Town’s wider recognition includes being named the world’s most beautiful city by Time Out in 2026 and ranking 15th globally in the 2026 Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards. It also secured 10th place among the world’s friendliest cities, making it the only African city to feature on both lists.
Significant strengths
The city’s appeal extends beyond leisure tourism. In a related report published by Bizcommunity, Cape Town Tourism chief executive Enver Duminy said: “Winning one of these is a good night. Winning both is a statement.”
The report also noted that arrivals at Cape Town International Airport from elsewhere in Africa increased by 17% in 2025, while foreign visitor spending in the city rose by 18% over the same period.
Johannesburg, however, retains significant strengths in business and entertainment. BusinessTech reported that Rand Merchant Bank, Standard Bank and Absa have secured major financial industry awards, while the Johannesburg-Pretoria technology hub has been recognised by Startup Genome as sub-Saharan Africa’s leading technology startup ecosystem.
The city also ranked seventh globally and first in Africa for nightlife in Time Out’s 2026 rankings, demonstrating its continued appeal as an entertainment destination.
The contrasting achievements underline the different roles the two cities play in South Africa’s economy. Cape Town’s international recognition is concentrated in tourism, hospitality and lifestyle, while Johannesburg’s strengths remain closely linked to financial services, technology and urban entertainment.
Although Cape Town leads in the number of tourism and lifestyle accolades highlighted in the report, the awards reflect different criteria and do not establish an overall ranking of the two cities across every measure of economic performance or quality of life.
