Cape Town – South African singer Elaine has found herself at the centre of a social media debate after her appearance at the Kota Festival in Nasrec, Johannesburg.
The singer performed at the festival on Saturday, 3 October, but it was her outfit that quickly became the main talking point online.
Elaine wore a two-piece denim outfit with a very short mini skirt, prompting mixed reactions from users on X.
Some questioned whether the look suited the image they had come to associate with the R&B singer, while others defended her right to wear what she wanted.
One user, Mzansi Observer, said the outfit was unlike the Elaine they knew.
Bafowethu not Elaine 😭😭😭😭 Her music has Aura 🌸….
The total opposite of what is depicted here. https://t.co/OJt0xQBEKb

“Bafowethu not Elaine. Her music has Aura.”
Another user said they were disappointed by the outfit but questioned why the mini skirt had become such a major issue.
“I’m also disappointed with how she is dressed but at the same time, if she decided to rock up in a bikini it wouldn’t be as bizarre as it is. Did she have to wear the mini skirt though?” the user wrote.
Other reactions were more critical.

One X user, KHxdi_Supa, suggested that revealing clothing could be used to attract attention when an artist’s music was not performing well.
“If music doesn’t sell, sex will. You know this very well wena Londie,” the user wrote.
Another user, posting as An African Proverb, reacted with humour to the discussion.
A further user, Chaotic, questioned Elaine’s musical direction, asking: “Wagcina uphelelaphi wena nomculo?”
The debate was not entirely negative.
I feel disappointed seeing Elaine perform in something that short. I know nudity sells, but I honestly thought she was different 😭 https://t.co/fuOib17xvC

Other social media users defended the singer and questioned why so much attention was being placed on her clothing rather than her performance.
Elaine has not publicly responded to the criticism.
The Kota Festival was held at the Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec and featured a line-up that included artists such as Cassper Nyovest, Makhadzi, Amanda Black, Nasty C, Emtee, A-Reece and Elaine.
The online debate has once again highlighted how quickly the appearance of female artists can become a bigger talking point than their performances.
For Elaine, her Kota Festival set has now sparked a wider conversation about fashion, personal expression and the expectations placed on female musicians.
Whether the outfit was a bold fashion choice or simply not what some fans expected, one thing is clear: it got people talking.
