Cape Town – Dell has emerged as South Africa’s most preferred laptop brand, beating HP, Lenovo and Apple, according to a new survey by market research firm Analytico.
MyBroadband reported that the survey of more than 2,100 information technology (IT) professionals, executives and early adopters found that 24% of respondents preferred Dell laptops. HP followed with 18.5%, ahead of Lenovo at 17.5% and Apple at 15.6%.
Asus ranked fifth with 11.3%, while Acer received 6% of the votes. Huawei, Microsoft and MSI attracted smaller shares of respondents.
The results continue a trend identified in earlier research. In November 2024, MyBroadband reported that 29% of respondents to its consumer technology survey preferred Dell, up from 25% six months earlier.
However, brand preference does not necessarily translate into sales or market share.
Intense competition
Data from International Data Corporation (IDC), cited by ITWeb in May 2025, showed Dell leading South Africa’s PC market in the first quarter of 2025 with a 20.4% share. HP followed closely at 20.3%, while Lenovo held 19.6%.
The figures highlight the intense competition among the three manufacturers, particularly as demand for computers with artificial intelligence capabilities grows.
Dell offers a broad portfolio, ranging from its premium XPS laptops to business-focused Latitude and Pro models, as well as Alienware gaming machines. HP and Lenovo also compete across consumer, business and gaming segments, while Apple maintains a strong presence in the premium laptop market.
A previous MyBroadband report on South Africa’s leading laptop brands, drawing on IDC data, found that HP held 26.1% of the broader Southern African PC market in the first half of 2023, followed by Dell at 18.9% and Lenovo at 17.8%.
The latest survey therefore points to Dell’s continued popularity among surveyed South African technology users, although actual purchasing patterns and market shares vary by period and measurement method.
