Cristiano Ronaldo kept his World Cup dream alive with another milestone performance as Portugal battled past Croatia 2–1 in a dramatic last 16 qualifier on Thursday.
The 41 year old captain showed his composure under immense pressure, converting a 68th minute penalty to cancel out Ivan Perisic’s opener and spark Portugal’s comeback. Deep into stoppage time, Goncalo Ramos headed home the winner before Croatia thought they had forced extra time, only for Josko Gvardiol’s late equaliser to be ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR review.

Ronaldo’s penalty made him the oldest player to score in a World Cup knockout match and also marked the first knockout goal of his remarkable World Cup career.

After the final whistle, Ronaldo produced one of the tournament’s most emotional moments by holding up and wearing a Portugal shirt bearing the number 21 in tribute to former teammate Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident almost a year earlier.
“We knew it before the game. It was a so special moment,” Ronaldo said afterwards. “It means a lot to us, not only because we won the game, but also the way we won the game. It was a difficult game.”

The victory ensures Ronaldo’s pursuit of World Cup glory continues for at least one more match, with Portugal set to face European champions Spain in a blockbuster last 16 clash.
