Lagos – NBA Africa has announced a multiyear collaboration with Future Concerns Nigeria Limited to launch NBA REC in Nigeria, marking the first rollout of the recreational basketball platform in West Africa.
The initiative is aimed at expanding opportunities for adults and university students to participate in organised basketball while strengthening the sport’s grassroots development in the country.
The collaboration will debut with the inaugural NBA REC University Tournament, set to take place at the University of Lagos on 7 and 8 August, featuring eight men’s university teams, fan entertainment and community programmes. Snack brand Munch It has joined Future Concerns as the tournament’s official partner.
Head of NBA Nigeria Fola Folowosele said the initiative reflects a shared commitment to developing young talent and growing basketball culture in the country.
“Nigeria is home to some of the most passionate basketball fans and talented young athletes in the world, and our collaboration with Future Concerns Nigeria Limited and Munch It reflects a shared commitment to creating more opportunities for young people to play, compete and connect through the game,” he said.
Folowosele added: “Through NBA REC, we are building a platform that brings together basketball, lifestyle and community, and we are excited to launch this initiative with the inaugural NBA REC University Tournament in Lagos.”
Future Concerns Group Managing Director Dr Eng Anthony Oguike said the partnership is about empowering young people through sport.
“The NBA is more than a game – it is a global platform that inspires teamwork, leadership, discipline, and the pursuit of excellence,” Oguike said.
He added that investing in university sports would help develop “the next generation of leaders, innovators and changemakers”, saying the company was proud to collaborate with NBA Africa on the new programme.
Munch It Brand Manager Enoma Aito said basketball aligns closely with the brand’s values.
“The game represents energy, confidence, creativity and community values that have always been at the heart of our brand.”
She added that the company looked forward to creating memorable experiences for young fans while supporting the continued growth of basketball and university sport in Nigeria.
Nigeria has a long-standing connection with the NBA, with more than 50 players from or with direct ties to the country having played in the league. NBA Africa also opened a subsidiary office in Lagos in 2022 as part of its efforts to expand the game across the continent.
