Cape Town – With the Ballon d’Or shortlist revealed, we break down how Lionel Messi, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé compare across a season that has all three in genuine contention.

Few Ballon d’Or races in recent memory have looked as open as this year’s, with Lionel Messi, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé all producing standout campaigns for club and country. Here’s how the three leading contenders stack up, statistically, heading into the ceremony in London.

Goals and assists

Kane leads the way on raw output, with 73 goals and 9 assists across 65 appearances for Bayern Munich and England, for a combined 82 goal contributions, the highest of the three.

Messi isn’t far behind on efficiency despite playing 16 fewer games, scoring 45 and assisting 30 for Inter Miami and Argentina, a combined 75 contributions in just 49 appearances.

Mbappé rounds out the trio with 58 goals and 13 assists in 60 games for Real Madrid and France, for 71 combined contributions.

Messi’s numbers stand out most once penalties are stripped away. His 41 non-penalty goals plus 30 assists gives him 71 non-penalty goal contributions, the best of the three, ahead of Kane’s 62 and Mbappé’s 56, despite Kane and Mbappé scoring far more penalties across the season, 20 and 15 respectively to Messi’s four.

Creativity and dribbling

This is where Messi separates himself most clearly. He created 46 big chances and completed 40 accurate through balls over the season, more than double Kane’s tallies in both categories (29 and 11) and well clear of Mbappé (20 and 6).

Messi also averages 2.92 key passes and 2.39 successful dribbles per game, both comfortably the best of the three, with Mbappé’s dribbling numbers (2.23 per game) the closest challenger in that category specifically.

Ratings and match impact

Messi was named Man of the Match 30 times across the season, almost double Kane’s 17 and more than double Mbappé’s 14, and finished with the highest average rating of the three at 8.55, compared to 7.79 for Kane and 7.74 for Mbappé.

His goal involvement percentage, the share of his side’s overall attacking output he was directly responsible for, also leads the way at 60%, just ahead of Mbappé’s 56.35% and well clear of Kane’s 45.05%, a reflection of the sheer scoring power around Kane at both Bayern and England.

Team and individual honours

Messi’s season delivered the Eastern Conference Cup and MLS Cup with Inter Miami, along with a second consecutive World Cup final with Argentina, where they finished runners-up to Spain.

Individually, he swept the MLS Golden Boot, MLS Top Assister award, MLS MVP and MLS Cup MVP, before adding the World Cup’s Best Player award in the summer.

Kane’s season was built on silverware at club level, retaining the Bundesliga title, winning the DFB Pokal for the first time in his career, and lifting the German Super Cup, while also picking up the Bundesliga Golden Boot, the European Golden Shoe and the DFB Pokal’s top scorer award.

Mbappé’s trophy cabinet looks lighter by comparison, with no major team honours to his name this season, but his individual numbers were exceptional.

He finished as top scorer in La Liga, the Champions League and the World Cup itself, sweeping all three Golden Boots on offer.

The verdict

There’s no clean statistical winner here. Kane’s goal and assist numbers are the best of the three, built on a career-best season and a bronze-medal World Cup with England.

Mbappé’s trio of Golden Boots across league, continental and international football is a rare individual feat. But Messi’s underlying numbers, his rating, his chance creation, and his efficiency without the ball in the net as often, make the strongest case that he remains the most complete player of the three, even at 39, and even without a major individual trophy to show for his World Cup final defeat.
