Johannesburg – Tashreeq Morris scored in his first appearance this season for Kaizer Chiefs, who won 2-0 at Sekhukhune United on Sunday to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup.
Sidelined by injury since the campaign kicked off last August, the striker who turns 32 on Wednesday, came off the bench in Polokwane to tap in a Makabi Lilepo cross after 86 minutes.
Another substitute, Mfundo Vilakazi, converted a twice-taken penalty in the first minute of added time to seal success for the visiting team.
With leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and second-placed Orlando Pirates assured of the two CAF Champions League places reserved for South Africa, Chiefs needed a win to claim the Confederation Cup slot.
Victory lifted third-placed Chiefs to 51 points, beyond the reach of AmaZulu with two rounds remaining, and back into the second-tier African competition.
Chiefs reached the group phase of the Confederation Cup this season, but lost out on goal difference to Egyptian club Al Masry for a place in the quarter-finals.
Johannesburg-based Chiefs continued a good late-season league run with a sixth victory in 10 matches. Three of the other four were drawn.
“We displayed commitment and desire and deserved the three points. It was great to see Tashreeq back on the pitch and scoring,” said Chiefs’ Tunisian co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef.
Fifth-placed Sekhukhune fell away after being early-season title challengers and sacking coach Eric Tinkler has not halted poor form. Losing to Chiefs left them with only two wins from 10 matches.
