Hugo Broos has confirmed that his time as Bafana Bafana head coach has come to an end, though he has left the door open to remaining involved with South African football in a different capacity.
The 74 year old Belgian, who became the longest serving coach in Bafana history after taking charge in June 2021, had always planned to retire following the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite speculation that he could extend his stay after guiding South Africa to a historic run to the round of 32, Broos says his decision to step away from coaching is final.

According to iDiski Times, Broos made the comments while speaking to Belgian publication Voetbalnieuws, where he revealed that SAFA president Danny Jordaan has already discussed the possibility of him remaining involved as an advisor or scout.
Broos insisted he will not continue in a coaching role and no longer wants football to dominate his life on a daily basis. However, he admitted he would consider helping South African football in another capacity if called upon.

The Belgian also revealed that he will return to South Africa at the end of July for a final farewell and to hear what proposal SAFA may have for him.
Broos leaves behind an impressive record with Bafana. In 60 matches in charge, he won 26 games, drew 22 and lost only 12. He guided South Africa to a third place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and oversaw the country’s best ever performance at a FIFA World Cup.
With Broos’ departure now confirmed, attention is expected to turn to who will succeed him, with former coach Pitso Mosimane among the names already being linked with the vacant position.
