Basson’s record-breaking debut draws Rabada comparisons

Cape Town – Eighteen-year-old JJ Basson took 11 wickets for 99 runs on his first-class debut for Lions against Boland at the Wanderers, the best match figures by a seamer on red-ball debut in South African history.

Basson, South Africa’s leading wicket-taker at this year’s Under-19 World Cup, led a Lions attack stripped of its senior options through injury and international call-ups, bowling alongside two fellow debutants.

He struck early in the first innings, removing Boland’s top order including two-time Test captain Neil Brand, before finishing with 7-62 in the first innings and adding four more wickets in the second.

Lions bowling coach Allan Donald, who worked closely with Basson during the match, likened the performance to his first glimpse of Kagiso Rabada, recalling the pace bowler’s T20I debut in Adelaide over a decade ago.

Donald praised Basson’s late swing, his wrist position and his left-arm angle as rare attributes, and said his composure under pressure was more typical of a bowler twice his age.

The timing carries added significance given South Africa’s current fast-bowling concerns, with Rabada sidelined by a hamstring injury and racing to be fit for the Australia Tests, while Ottneil Baartman has also been ruled out of the ODI series with a similar issue, replaced by Duan Jansen.

Basson will miss Lions’ next fixture against Knights as he completes his final school exams, but said cricket would be his sole focus once they are finished.
