Duduzane Zuma has spent much of his adult life in the public spotlight.

For years, he was best known as the son of former South African president Jacob Zuma and for his business links to the Gupta family. He later began pursuing a political career of his own, initially within the African National Congress (ANC), before becoming increasingly involved in the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

His political profile rose sharply in August 2026 when he was appointed First Deputy President of the MK Party, placing him among the organisation’s most senior leaders.

The appointment also triggered speculation about whether he could eventually succeed his father as leader of the party — a suggestion Duduzane has since played down.

So, who is Duduzane Zuma?

How old is Duduzane Zuma?

Duduzane Zuma was born on 20 May 1984 and is 42 years old as of August 2026.

Africa Confidential lists his date of birth as 20 May 1984. Other biographical records identify his birthplace as Maputo, Mozambique.

He is the son of Jacob Zuma and the late Kate Mantsho Zuma and is the twin brother of Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla.

Who are Duduzane Zuma’s parents?

Duduzane’s father is Jacob Zuma, who served as South Africa’s president from 2009 until his resignation in 2018.

His mother was Kate Mantsho Zuma, who died in 2000.

Duduzane and his twin sister, Duduzile, were born during Jacob Zuma’s years in exile.

The Zuma family has long been a prominent feature of South African political life, particularly because of Jacob Zuma’s decades-long involvement in the ANC and his subsequent leadership of the MK Party.

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture found that Duduzane worked for Sahara Computers, a Gupta company, and later held numerous directorships and shareholdings in Gupta-linked businesses.

The commission’s report said he became a director of Mabengela Investments in 2008 at the age of 26 and subsequently held a number of positions in Gupta-owned companies.

The commission also recorded that Duduzane held interests in companies including Mabengela Investments, Westdawn Investments, Shiva Uranium and Tegeta Resources and Exploration, among others.

These business relationships became a major part of the public controversy surrounding him.

What did the Zondo Commission say about Duduzane Zuma?

Duduzane’s name featured prominently in the work of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into State Capture, chaired by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.

The commission examined his business relationship with the Gupta family and his access to his father, who was president at the time.

In its report, the commission said evidence showed that Gupta family member Rajesh “Tony” Gupta brought Duduzane to meetings with government and state-owned-enterprise officials.

The commission concluded that Duduzane’s proximity to Jacob Zuma could have provided the Guptas with access to the president.

The report also said Duduzane stood to benefit financially from relationships involving Gupta-linked companies.

These are findings and conclusions contained in the State Capture Commission’s report, rather than a criminal conviction against Duduzane.

Duduzane testified before the commission about his relationship with the Gupta family and described Tony Gupta as a close friend.

Duduzane Zuma and the Gupta family

Duduzane’s relationship with the Guptas became one of the defining controversies of his public life.

The Gupta family — brothers Ajay, Atul and Rajesh Gupta — became enormously influential during Jacob Zuma’s presidency and were at the centre of South Africa’s State Capture scandal.

Duduzane worked with companies associated with the family and held directorships and interests in several of their businesses.

The State Capture Commission’s findings placed his business relationships within its broader examination of how private interests allegedly gained access to government and state-owned entities.

Duduzane has disputed suggestions that his business career was simply the product of his father’s political position.

Nevertheless, his association with the Gupta family remains an important part of his public and political biography.

Duduzane Zuma’s Porsche crash and court case

Another major episode in Duduzane’s public life was a fatal road crash in Johannesburg.

In 2014, the Porsche he was driving collided with a minibus taxi on the M1 in Johannesburg. Passenger Phumzile Dube later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Duduzane was subsequently charged with culpable homicide and reckless or negligent driving.

In July 2019, the Randburg Magistrates’ Court found him not guilty of the charges.

Magistrate Tebogo Thupaatlase found that the state had failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Duduzane had driven negligently. The court heard arguments about aquaplaning and an unexpected puddle of water on the road.

The acquittal is an important distinction: Duduzane was charged in connection with the crash but was not convicted.

When did Duduzane Zuma enter politics?

Duduzane’s move into formal party politics became particularly visible in 2021.

At the time, he openly discussed ambitions of one day becoming president of the ANC.

In December 2021, he was elected chairperson of the ANC’s Newlands East Ward 11 branch in Durban.

SABC News reported that his election followed a six-month campaign and represented an early step towards his stated ambition of pursuing a leadership role in the governing party.

His political ambitions attracted considerable attention because he was not simply another young ANC activist: he was the son of a former ANC president and former president of South Africa.

Did Duduzane Zuma want to become ANC president?

Yes.

During his early political involvement, Duduzane publicly spoke about his ambition to become ANC president.

His 2021 campaign for a leadership position in an ANC branch was widely viewed as an initial step towards building a political base.

SABC News reported at the time that his election as branch chairperson was linked to his stated ambition of becoming a future ANC president.

That ambition, however, did not culminate in Duduzane becoming ANC president.

His political trajectory subsequently moved towards the MK Party.

Duduzane Zuma and the MK Party

The formation and rapid rise of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party, commonly known as the MK Party, created a new political platform for the Zuma family.

The party was launched in 2023 and was led by Jacob Zuma during the 2024 national election campaign.

Duduzane was not initially the central public face of the organisation in the way his father was. His twin sister, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, was also a prominent MK Party figure.

In February 2026, Jacob Zuma appointed Duduzane to an 11-member Presidential Task Team created to assist with the party’s operations and growth ahead of the local government elections.

EWN reported that the team was intended to contribute to the party’s day-to-day operations, with Jacob Zuma saying he could not personally attend to every party responsibility.

MK Party president Jacob Zuma announced a major leadership reshuffle that saw Duduzane appointed First Deputy President.

He replaced former Western Cape judge president John Hlophe, who remained the party’s parliamentary leader in the National Assembly.

The reshuffle also saw Tony Yengeni appointed Second Deputy President and Rev Mxolisi Phakathi appointed national chairperson.

The appointment moved Duduzane from being a relatively emerging figure within the party to one of its most senior leaders.

It also immediately raised questions about the party’s future leadership.

Is Duduzane Zuma being positioned to succeed Jacob Zuma?

Duduzane’s appointment has inevitably fuelled speculation about succession.

His father is the founder and president of the MK Party, while Duduzane is now one of the party’s two deputy presidents.

However, there is currently no announced succession plan naming Duduzane as Jacob Zuma’s successor.

In August 2026, Duduzane directly rejected the idea that his new position should be interpreted as a succession project.

Speaking at the 2026 BizNews Conference in the Drakensberg, he said his focus was on carrying out his responsibilities.

“People want to talk about succession; they want to talk about a legacy project. I’m here to do my job,” Duduzane said.

He said his focus was on contributing to building a better South Africa and spoke about economic opportunities, industrialisation, safety and security.

For now, therefore, the succession question remains speculation rather than an established political plan.

What does Duduzane Zuma’s political rise mean?

Duduzane’s rise represents another chapter in the political history of the Zuma family.

His father remains the dominant figure in the MK Party, while several members of the wider Zuma family have also been involved in politics.

Duduzane’s elevation to First Deputy President therefore raises broader questions about political dynasties, family influence and generational succession in South African politics.

His political background is also unusually complex.

On one hand, he has the advantages that come with the Zuma name: immediate public recognition, political connections and a close association with one of South Africa’s most influential political figures.

On the other, his career has been shaped by controversies surrounding his business relationship with the Gupta family, the State Capture Inquiry and his father’s turbulent political legacy.

His challenge will be to establish himself as a political figure in his own right rather than simply as Jacob Zuma’s son.

What happens next for Duduzane Zuma?

Duduzane’s immediate task is to fulfil his responsibilities as MK Party First Deputy President and help the organisation build its political structures.

His long-term political ambitions remain less clear.

He has previously spoken about wanting to rise to the highest levels of politics, including his earlier ambition to become ANC president. But since joining the MK Party’s senior leadership, he has rejected speculation that his current position is primarily about succession.

Whether he eventually seeks to lead the MK Party, pursue national political office or take another direction remains to be seen.
