Cape Town – The National Assembly’s Section 89 impeachment committee investigating President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm scandal are meeting in Parliament to begin mapping out its work, including discussions on its terms of reference and the appointment of evidence leaders.
The 31-member committee was established after the Constitutional Court revived the impeachment process, finding that Parliament had failed to properly deal with the allegations linked to the theft of foreign currency at Ramaphosa’s Limpopo farm in 2020.

The committee’s meeting comes as Ramaphosa challenges the Section 89 Independent Panel report in court and seeks to halt the inquiry until his legal review is finalised. The panel had found prima facie evidence of possible serious misconduct and constitutional violations.
Committee chairperson Makashule Gana has maintained that the process will continue despite the president’s legal challenge, saying the committee has a constitutional responsibility to proceed with its work.
The inquiry centres on allegations surrounding the theft of foreign currency from a couch at Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game farm, with the president denying wrongdoing and previously stating that the money was linked to the sale of buffaloes.
The committee is expected to determine the next steps in the inquiry as Parliament moves forward with the impeachment process.
