Cape Town – South Africa has condemned what it described as the “illegal abduction” of South African nationals aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla bound for Gaza after reports emerged that the vessel was seized in international waters by Israeli authorities.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation said the flotilla was part of a peaceful civilian-led humanitarian mission aimed at highlighting the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and delivering aid to Palestinians.
The government expressed “grave concern” over reports that South African citizens aboard the flotilla may now be facing detention or imprisonment in Israel.
“It must be underscored that the Flotilla, a civilian-led initiative, embarked upon a peaceful and humanitarian mission,” the department said.
Humanitarian missions
South Africa said the incident raises serious humanitarian, legal and diplomatic concerns, adding that any forceful detention of unarmed civilians in international waters would amount to a breach of international law and fundamental human rights.
The government called for the immediate protection of all those aboard the flotilla, including South African nationals, and urged the international community to ensure the safe passage of humanitarian missions.
Pretoria said it would engage relevant stakeholders and organisations linked to the Global Sumud Flotilla in efforts to secure the safe release of those affected while keeping their families informed of developments.
South Africa reiterated its commitment to international law, human rights and the protection of its citizens abroad amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza Strip.
