Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa has objected to the proposed appointment of Advocate Thandazani Madonsela as evidence leader in the parliamentary impeachment inquiry, arguing that Madonsela is conflicted.
The Impeachment Committee was due to receive an update from Parliament’s legal unit on Wednesday, but was instead informed that Ramaphosa had formally objected to the appointment the previous night.
One of Ramaphosa’s concerns is that he removed Madonsela as his appointee to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) after interviews in 2022.
Madonsela has also previously provided legal advice to the ANC parliamentary caucus on the impeachment matter.
Ramaphosa faces the inquiry over the 2020 theft of US dollars from his Phala Phala farm.
