Limpopo – Popular musician and uMkhonto weSizwe Party MP Papa Penny has resigned from both Parliament and the party, citing internal attacks, vilification and reputational damage allegedly caused by the party’s Limpopo leadership.
In a resignation letter addressed to Jacob Zuma, Papa Penny, whose real name is Gezane Eric Kobane, said he joined the MK Party voluntarily and understood that political struggle came with sacrifices, but did not expect hostility from within the organisation.
He accused provincial leaders in Limpopo of belittling and attacking him, saying such behaviour was difficult to accept when it came from fellow party members rather than political opponents.
“And as a revolutionary, I could stomach such behaviour if it were coming from the enemies of our revolution. Unfortunately, when such comes from those within our ranks, it is impossible to overlook such a betrayal,” he wrote.

Papa Penny also claimed media statements issued against him had damaged the reputation and dignity he had built over many years.
Despite his grievances, he thanked Zuma and the party for the opportunity to serve in Parliament following the 2024 general elections.
“I joined MKP voluntarily, and I served it to this point to the best of my abilities,” he wrote, adding that he would “forever be grateful” for the opportunity to serve the public through Parliament.
