High Court to rule on Ramaphosa’s bid to halt Phala Phala impeachment process on Friday

Cape Town – The Western Cape High Court is set to deliver judgment on Friday, 24 July 2026, on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s urgent application to halt Parliament’s Section 89 Impeachment Committee.

Ramaphosa is seeking to suspend the impeachment process pending a judicial review of the independent Section 89 panel report, which found prima facie evidence that he may have violated the Constitution and the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act (PRECCA) in relation to the 2020 Phala Phala burglary.

The application follows a Constitutional Court ruling in May that sent the panel’s report back to Parliament, allowing impeachment proceedings to continue. Ramaphosa’s review of the report is scheduled to be heard from 2 to 4 September.

Meanwhile, the Impeachment Committee will continue with its preparatory work, including appointing evidence leaders and finalising its terms of reference, unless the court orders otherwise. Parliament recently adopted new rules governing the committee’s work, enabling the 31-member body to proceed with its investigation into the Phala Phala matter.
