Cape Town – Residents in parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal have been warned to brace for severe thunderstorms, heavy downpours, hail and possible flooding on Monday, 2 November, as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issues a Yellow Level 4 weather warning for the affected areas.
The warning covers the extreme south-central parts of Limpopo, the Highveld and escarpment of Mpumalanga, excluding the extreme south-west, as well as the western and north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
SAWS cautioned that the storms could bring “heavy downpours, hail and excessive lightning”, potentially resulting in flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements.

A Yellow Level 2 warning has also been issued for the KwaZulu-Natal coastline and adjacent interior between Port Edward and Mtubatuba, where heavy rainfall, strong gusty winds, hail and lightning could cause localised flooding and infrastructure damage.
Meanwhile, a Yellow Level 1 warning is in place for the extreme north-eastern escarpment of the Eastern Cape, eastern parts of the Free State, southern Gauteng and the extreme south-western parts of Mpumalanga.
These conditions could result in localised flooding, damage to property and temporary structures, as well as disruptions to electricity supply and communications.
Provincial weather outlook
In Gauteng, partly cloudy and warm to hot conditions are expected, with temperatures becoming cloudy as scattered showers and thundershowers develop. Northern parts of the province could experience particularly hot conditions.
Mpumalanga is forecast to experience cloudy and cool to warm weather, with scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers. Fog patches are expected over the escarpment in the morning.
Limpopo will experience isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, becoming widespread over the extreme south-central parts. The extreme north-east is expected to remain dry.

The Northern Cape will largely experience partly cloudy conditions, with isolated showers and thundershowers possible in the extreme north-east.
SAWS has advised residents in areas affected by severe weather to remain alert to changing conditions and take precautions against possible flooding and storm-related damage.
