Cape Town – A 32-year-old suspected gang member has been arrested after opening fire on police officers in Manenberg, Cape Town, during deployments for South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) members who were strategically deployed in the area spotted the notorious wanted suspect, who allegedly started shooting at them upon seeing the officers.
“ The AGU members returned fire and arrested the suspect,” SAPS said in a statement.
The suspect was found in possession of a firearm fitted with an extended magazine and 32 rounds of ammunition.
The shooting incident occurred approximately 150 metres from a voting station in Ruimte Road, Manenberg. No injuries were reported.
The suspect is expected to appear in court on charges of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Western Cape SAPS management commended the officers for their vigilance and swift response, saying their actions had “averted a potential shooting incident” and led to the arrest of a wanted gang member.
The operation formed part of police deployments aimed at ensuring the safety of communities during the 2026 Local Government Elections.
