Cape Town – The Democratic Alliance (DA) has offered a R50,000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the killing of its ward candidate, Sinovuyo Dyokwe, in Dunoon.
Dyokwe, a 48-year-old Ward 104 by-election candidate, was shot dead on Saturday after spending the day registering voters. She was returning home from voter registration activities when she was attacked in Mnandi Street at about 18:00, according to Western Cape police, who have opened a murder investigation.
The killing has intensified concerns over political violence ahead of the municipal elections, especially as another councillor, Sixelo Mleve, was also recently killed in Gqeberha.
DA leaders JP Smith and Nicholas Gotsell expressed shock and condemned the killing, describing Dyokwe as a dedicated community activist.

“The Democratic Alliance is saddened and outraged by the murder of our Dunoon Ward 104 by-election candidate and community activist, Sinovuyo Dyokwe,” they said, adding that she was known for her commitment, positive attitude and community work.
Smith said the party was working closely with the South African Police Service on the investigation but cautioned against speculation about the motive.
“It’s probably not wise to speculate on this, but the city’s investigative resources are working closely with the South African Police,” he said, adding that investigators had already spent hours interviewing witnesses.

He also confirmed the reward initiative: “As such, we have indicated to the police that the DA has offered a R50,000 reward for information if that should assist in getting informants to come forward.”
The DA said it is providing counselling support to those affected and vowed to ensure justice is served, saying it will closely monitor the investigation.
