Durban – An ANC ward councillor was shot and killed in Klaarwater, near Mariannhill, in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday afternoon, prompting a major police investigation as officers search for the gunman.
Police said the councillor was meeting with several community members in his office when an unknown man arrived, claiming he needed assistance.
The suspect allegedly lured the councillor outside before opening fire.
“The deceased reportedly went outside to assist the man when the suspect drew a firearm and shot him several times,” said KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.
According to Netshiunda, the councillor was declared dead at the scene after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect fled on foot immediately after the shooting.
Specialised police units have since descended on the crime scene, combing the area for evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
“The motive for the killing remains unknown at this stage, and a manhunt for the suspect is underway,” Netshiunda said.
Police have not yet released the identity of the councillor, and no arrests have been made. Investigations into the motive behind the fatal shooting are continuing.
