Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal – A woman was shot and killed while walking to work in Ekuphakameni, Inanda, on Wednesday morning in an attack that has left residents shocked and police searching for answers.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 8.19am. Upon arrival, officers discovered the woman’s body lying on an unpaved footpath a short distance from her home.
According to RUSA, the victim had sustained gunshot wounds to the head and shoulder and was declared dead at the scene.
Residents told responding officers that they heard four gunshots before leaving their homes to investigate. They allegedly saw a man dressed in a blue dust coat fleeing the area shortly after the shooting.
The victim’s mother said her daughter had left home and was on her way to work when she was attacked.
She further revealed that an unknown man had visited their home about a week earlier, insisting on speaking to the victim. The woman reportedly refused to meet him because she did not know him. It remains unclear whether the visit was connected to the fatal shooting.
Investigators are exploring possible motives after the victim’s cellphone, handbag and other personal belongings were found untouched at the scene, suggesting that robbery was not the motive for the attack.
Police have launched an investigation into the murder and are expected to interview witnesses as efforts continue to identify and locate the suspect.
No arrests had been reported at the time of publication.
