Cape Town – A 39-year-old police sergeant was found dead in Limpopo on Thursday, hours after allegedly shooting and killing his 35-year-old wife in Abbotspoort village, police said.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident occurred at Abbotspoort, Martinique village, on Wednesday, 21 October 2026.
The sergeant, who was stationed at Witpoort, allegedly shot his wife before fleeing the scene in a white Isuzu bakkie.
“Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel were summoned to the scene and the victim was declared dead at the scene,” SAPS said in a statement.
Police opened a murder case and launched a manhunt for the suspect.
On Thursday, 22 October, at about 06:30, police received information that the suspect’s vehicle had been spotted parked along the road in Botshabelo Section, within the Tom Burke policing area.
Officers who responded to the scene found the white bakkie approximately 100 metres from the man’s body.
According to SAPS, the sergeant was found “under a Morula tree with a gunshot wound to the head”. His state-issued firearm was found next to his body.
An inquest has been opened at Tom Burke police station.
“The motive for the incident is unknown at this stage but Domestic Violence cannot be ruled out,” police said.
Limpopo provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers condemned the incident, describing it as gender-based violence and femicide.
Police investigations into the incident are continuing.
