WATCH | ‘It was consensual’: Sibiya breaks silence on alleged rape of 18-year-old

Johannesburg – Suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, has denied raping an 18-year-old woman and said he will plead not guilty to all charges against him.

Sibiya made the statement in his bail affidavit, read by his attorney Estelle Kilian during his bail application at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

“I am intent on proving transparency on the merits, so as to show this court that I am not guilty of the charges against me,” Sibiya said.

“It is my intention to plead not guilty to the charges which the state has against me, and I say this because I believe that I have a defence to any of the charges they have against me.”

Sibiya faces five charges, including rape, human trafficking and the alleged sexual grooming of a 16-year-old girl.

The State alleges that Sibiya raped an 18-year-old woman at a Sandton hotel on 16 May 2026 after she became unconscious from alcohol.

According to the charge sheet, Sibiya had taken the woman and two others to The Grand strip club in Sandton, where he allegedly “bought them food and plied them with liquor at The Grand and continued doing so at the Garden Court Hotel.”

Sibiya’s lawyer has disputed the rape allegation, telling the court that the sexual encounter was consensual.

He is also accused of grooming a 16-year-old girl on WhatsApp between July and August 2026. The State alleges he sent her nude photographs of herself, persuaded her to send sexual videos and possessed and distributed sexual images of her.

Sibiya is further accused of trafficking three people for sexual exploitation. The alleged offences occurred between 16 May and 3 August.

The bail application has been postponed to Thursday, with Sibiya remaining in custody.
