Cape Town – Two brothers who had run out of money to buy fuel received an unexpected lifeline after a stranger’s simple request at a petrol station turned into a life-changing act of generosity.
The stranger was South African philanthropist and content creator Bi Phakathi, who, together with Reward the Kind founder Logan Mayberry, first tested the brothers’ willingness to help by asking, “Don’t you have just R5? I wanted to buy a litre of petrol.”
One of the brothers explained they were also struggling, saying, “I’m low. I’m waiting for money from my boss,” while joking that they had enough fuel left to drive only another metre.

After revealing it had all been a test, Phakathi asked how much it would cost to fill their tank. When they replied R1,500, he surprised them by saying, “Go ahead and fill up… This is my gesture. I’m going to pay for it. Why are you crying, brother?”
Overwhelmed by the unexpected kindness, one of the brothers broke down in tears, responding, “Because we are still being looked after by the master on top (God).”
The emotional exchange prompted Mayberry to offer a prayer of gratitude, describing the meeting as a “divine encounter.” The story did not end there, however, as Phakathi and Mayberry invited the brothers to meet them again two weeks later at a shopping centre, hinting that even greater support was still to come.
