Alice – Two University of Fort Hare students have been arrested for alleged public violence after objects were reportedly thrown at moving vehicles and a police vehicle was allegedly targeted for arson during protests on Friday.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the suspects, aged 19 and 23, were arrested on 14 August 2026 and are expected to appear in the Alice Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 17 August.
According to police, the students allegedly threw objects at moving motor vehicles and attempted to set a police vehicle on fire during the protest.

SAPS said six motorists had reported damage to their vehicles following the incident.
“Acts of public violence and the destruction of property will not be tolerated,” the police said.
Cases of malicious damage to property have been opened and are being investigated.
Police also warned that further incidents could result in officers entering the university premises to make additional arrests.
“Should any further incidents occur, the SAPS will be compelled to exercise its powers under Section 48 of the Criminal Procedure Act, which authorises entry onto campus premises for the purpose of effecting additional arrests,” SAPS said.
The police urged students to refrain from unlawful conduct and to raise their grievances through peaceful and lawful channels.
“SAPS remains committed to upholding law and order and calls on all students to refrain from unlawful conduct and to pursue any grievances through proper and peaceful channels,” the police said.
